To My Beautiful Daughter

Margaret found the card by accident.

It was tucked inside an old sewing box.

Her mother had been gone eleven years.

She almost didn’t open it.

Something made her stop and sit down.

The handwriting was shaky but familiar.

“To my beautiful daughter,” it began.

Margaret’s hands trembled slightly.

She remembered her mother writing letters often.

This one she had never seen.

“Always know,” it read, “that I love you more than you can imagine.”

Margaret read it twice.

“No matter the ups and downs of life,” the card continued.

“I will always be by your side.”

She pressed the card to her chest.

Did her mother know she would find this now?

Had she written it for a different day?

Margaret thought back to their last years together.

Her mother had grown quiet near the end.

Words had become harder for her.

Maybe this was the goodbye she never got to say aloud.

“Be brave, be strong,” the card said.

“Always believe in your wonderful self.”

Margaret whispered the words out loud.

Her voice cracked on “wonderful.”

She hadn’t felt wonderful in months.

Her husband had passed last spring.

Her children lived far away now.

Some days felt impossibly long.

Could one old card really change that?

She read it a third time anyway.

“With love, Mom,” it ended simply.

Margaret closed her eyes.

She could almost hear her mother’s voice.

Soft, steady, full of certainty.

That voice had carried her through childhood.

Through her wedding day.

Through the birth of her own children.

Why had it taken so long to find this?

She placed the card on her nightstand.

Somewhere she would see it each morning.

A reminder written years ago.

Still true, still needed.

Her mother’s love had not faded.

It had simply been waiting.

Waiting for the right moment to speak again.

Margaret picked up her phone.

She called her daughter in Ohio.

“I found something today,” she said softly.

“I want to pass it on to you.”

Love finds its way home, eventually.
