I still remember last year’s visit.
My mother had just started a new project.
“What are you making?” I asked her.
“Oh, just a little something,” she said, smiling.
I didn’t press further.
She loves her surprises.
This year, I visited her again.
The house smelled like fresh coffee.
“Come in, come in,” she said.
Her living room looked just as cozy as ever.
A soft couch sat by the window.
A shelf full of little decorations stood nearby.
Paintings hung on the walls, familiar and warm.
“I have something for you,” she said.
Her eyes were bright with excitement.
“Close your eyes,” she told me.
I laughed but obeyed.
“Now open them,” she said.
I opened my eyes slowly.
There it was, a huge quilt.
Butterflies and flowers covered every inch.
Each patch was stitched with such care.
“Mom,” I whispered, “is this the one?”
“Yes,” she said, holding it up proudly.
“It took me a whole year.”
I could hardly speak.
“You made this for me?” I asked.
“Of course,” she said. “Who else?”
Tears filled my eyes instantly.
The colors were so vivid, so alive.
Every butterfly seemed ready to fly.
“How did you do all this?” I asked.
“Stitch by stitch,” she said, laughing.
“Every evening, after dinner.”
I imagined her sitting there, night after night.
Her hands moving steadily, patiently.
“It’s beautiful,” I said. “Truly beautiful.”
“I wanted it perfect,” she admitted.
“For you, nothing less would do.”
I hugged the quilt close to my chest.
It smelled like her house, like home.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
“You’re welcome, sweetheart,” she replied.
Her smile said more than words could.
We stood there for a moment, quiet.
The light in the room felt warm.
Outside, the day moved on without us.
Inside, time seemed to pause.
My mother’s hands had made something lasting.
Something stitched with pure love.
I will keep this quilt forever.
My mother gave me more than fabric. She gave me love, stitched by hand.
